Our 2013-2014 Curriculum

My husband posted on Facebook the other day that I was ‘sniffing the school books’.  LOL!  I didn’t comment, but, yes, it was true!  Our new (and used) school books have been arriving gradually over the last few weeks.   I’ve been finalizing curriculum choices, pouring over the books we’ve received, creating corresponding materials as needed, and hammering out tentative yearly schedules.

More importantly, I’ve been  praying about our upcoming school year as our children enter 6th, 4th, 2nd, Kindergarten, and preschool.  In all honesty, I am nervous as we start this school year. We recently moved to another state with different homeschool regulations.  Most of our belongings are still in storage (including some school items I was hoping to use this year).  Our family is living in an apartment, and we are anticipating one more move later this fall to a neighboring state.  I am trying to release my fears and expectations to the One who is completely in control.  Please pray that He would calm my anxious heart. It is only through His strength that I can love my family and nurture them in the areas God wants them to develop this year.

So, amidst the frenzy of organizing and preparing, I hold my plans a little more loosely this year, predicting that God will once again be growing me in the area of flexibility.  With prayer, eyes to my Savior, and perhaps some dark chocolate in hand, we venture into another year of learning…

Subjects our oldest three can do together!

History / Geography

For history this year, we plan to use Mystery of History: Creation to Resurrection!  We have the CD audio and the challenge cards.  I decided to forgo the notebooking sheets, but I did schedule additional historical read alouds and readers to correspond with the spine as well as portions of Evan Moor’s History Pockets (Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome).

We are also looking forward to delving into learning about current events through on grade level reading and discussion of God’s World News.

Science

Our new home state is filled with trees and has more birds and insects than I ever remember seeing in our former state.  So, what a perfect time to use Apologia’s Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day (with the coordinating notebook)!  We will also be beginning bird watchers with our field guides in hand!  Additionally, we plan to incorporate some fun reading with The Burgess Bird Book and use our Companion Notebook to draw and write about the birds.

Bible and Devotions

  • Our choice for devotionals this year are related to our history text/time periods – Jashub’s Journal and The Ten Commandments.
  • For apologetics, we plan to use Apologia’s Who Is God?

Homeschooling ~ Embarking on a Journey

This post is part of the 5th annual “Not” Back-To-School Blog Hop over at the iHomeschool Network.  This week, homeschoolers near and far are sharing their curriculum choices for this coming school year!

Scripture Based Handwriting (and more!)

While working on plans for this upcoming school year, I decided that I really wanted our youngest daughter to memorize two passages of Scripture ~ Exodus 20:1-17 (The Ten Commandments) and Proverbs 31:10-13 (the virtuous woman).  In order to combine subjects and enhance learning, I created several booklets to coordinate with each passage of Scripture.  And, this is what was formed…

Scripture Based Handwriting, Sight Words, Copywork, and Bible Memory Cut Aparts!

It’s Here ~ Joyful Heart Bible and Rhyme!!

It is finally time to unveil Joyful Heart Bible and Rhyme: Joyful Learning for 3-5 year olds

br_cover3d_croppedIt was a huge undertaking to revise this curriculum, but I pray that it will be a blessing to you and your family.

The following are updates/upgrades from the free lessons online at Hubbard’s Cupboard:

  • ADDITIONAL PRINTABLES – I created TONS of new sheets to go along with all of the suggested activities!

  • FONT SORTS – All of the letters needed are included with the sorting mats and a few VARIATIONS are given to switch it up a bit.

  • GROUPED DOCS for FASTER & EASIER PRINTING  (for example, all of the Letter Art Sheets, all of the Letter Craft Sheets, Bible Memory, etc . Now, they can easily be printed ahead of time, sorted into files or placed together in a binder or notebook – ready to go!)

  • WEEK BY WEEK LESSON DOCS – These contain the weekly/daily plan, all of the week specific printables, and a new MATERIALS PREP LIST all in one document per week.

  • Now, there are UN-NUMBERED REVIEW WEEKS, making it simpler to insert review weeks near the holidays and giving greater flexibility to start the curriculum when you want.

There are almost a thousand pages included in the revision.

Introducing…

whimsical tree of hearts version 2 (non-editable web-ready file)

Joyful Heart Learning is an extension of the free teaching resources that have been available online at Hubbard’s Cupboard since 2000.  All resources at Hubbard’s Cupboard are still free.  However, I am extending, refining, and making some of them easier to download for purchase.

Joyful Heart Learning contains curriculum and resources that are…

developmentally appropriate
Scripture based
literacy filled
enjoyable for both home and classroom use

This makes me super excited about our whimsical heart tree logo which conveys the joy of learning and growth – and our tagline which expresses my desire to create materials and learning opportunities that engage the heart, hands, and mind!

Please know that my intention has never been to sell learning materials. I just really enjoy creating them!  However, after receiving many requests from visitors to the website over the years, taking in consideration for the time and energy expended, and after prayer and taking my husband’s counsel,  there will now be the opportunity for others to purchase revised/updated versions of some of the curriculum.  As stated above, though, the free versions will remain at Hubbard’s Cupboard!

I also now have a brand new Joyful Heart Learning  ‘shop‘ open through The Teacher’s Notebook.

Character Traits for Kids

As part of the Joyful Heart Character preschool curriculum at Hubbard’s Cupboard, 27 character traits are explored with children.  This is done through singing a character trait song, memorizing a corresponding Bible verse, reading aloud related Scripture verses, studying a character or story from the Bible that models the trait, reading associated fictional stories, and  completing a craft or activity linked to the character trait being studied.

The following character traits are emphasized in the Joyful Heart Character Curriculum…
Orderly, Attentive, Teachable, Obedient, Respectful, Honest, Forgiving, Peacemaker, Courageous, Discerning, Content, Servant Hearted, Thankful, Self Control, Loving, Humble, Prayerful, Modest, Joyful, Generous, Responsible, Compassionate, Kind, Patient, Diligent, Faithful, Full of Faith

We have had the Character Trait Tune Charts available since the creation of the curriculum…Character Trait Tune Charts

but now you can also choose to print ones like this!

Character Trait Definitions and Verses

Joyful Heart Character: Character Trait Definition and Verse Charts

If you are looking for a single sided chart that contains just the character trait definition and the related Bible verse, the above charts are for you!  The Character Trait Definition and Verse Charts focus on the same character traits as the song charts and use the same picture cues.  (Although these were originally designed to be used with the Joyful Heart Character preschool curriculum, elementary aged children can benefit from these, too.)

As Christians, we desire to exhibit traits that reflect Christ.  We can train and instruct our children in these traits, but without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, they will be powerless.   As we teach the character traits, we need to pray that God will help our children understand that they are sinful and in need of a Savior, that He would stir in our children a desire to live for the glory of God, that they would accept Jesus as their own Savior, and invite the working of the Holy Spirit.  Children need God, not just good morals and character traits to follow!  We can use Bible stories to point them to God.  The stories in the Bible, the characters, the events – –  ALL point to God.  So, in addition to studying the character traits exhibited by the people of the Bible, we also need to make sure to take time to think about and discuss what the stories reveal about the character of our Lord.  Children will learn that He is all knowing, all powerful, faithful, loving, gracious, attentive, eternal, and much more!   It is a good reminder for us as well =)
